MAGAHINGA GORILLA NATIONAL PARK ACCOMMODATION
Mgahinga Gorilla National Park is located in south western part of Uganda, situated with in the Virunga Mountains. The park is an extension of Rwanda’s Volcanoes National Park and Virunga National Park of Democratic Republic of Congo to the park’s southern sector. Mgahinga Gorilla National Park boasts being home to the endangered mountain gorillas and a unique primate called the Golden Monkey also found in Rwanda’s Volcanoes National Park, the park is one of the few parks where these Mountain Gorillas can be spotted the rest being Bwindi Impenetrable National Park in Uganda, Volcanoes National Park in Rwanda and Virunga National Park of Democratic Republic of Congo.
Mgahinga Gorilla National Park sits high in the clouds at an altitude of between 2227m and 4127m (7306 ft to 13540 ft) with three inactive Volcanoes namely Mount Gahinga, Mount Sabinyo and Mount Muhavura situated on the Virunga ranges that cut into Uganda, Congo and Rwanda. Mgahinga derives its name from the local word “Gahinga” meaning piles of volcanic stones cleared from farmland at the foot of the volcanoes. The park is covered in bamboo forest, Albertine rift montane forest, Ruwenzori-Virunga montane moorlands with tree heath and at high altitude it has an alpine zone.
Mgahinga Gorilla National Park has an area coverage of 33.9 sq km (13.1 sq mi) making Uganda’s smallest National Park. The park is home to over 76 mammal species, 180 recorded bird species and primates. Mgahinga is also a huge cultural significant place with the indigenous Batwa Pygmies who are hunters and gatherers, they were also the first people to settle in the forest.
