Bohoma Community Walk

Bohoma Community Walk , Bwindi Impenetrable National Park is a place rich in natural biodiversity ranging from wildlife to human activities. During the three-hour Buhoma Community Walks, you will discover more about the daily activities of the local communities and African culture. You will also get a better understanding of how people live in harmony with wildlife.

The walk is only conducted by experienced guides who know the locals best and are well versed with the right trails to use to ensure your safety and fruitful walk. Community walks is your great opportunity to experience the African way of life by engaging in activities such as farming, craft making, cooking local dishes, and making local alcohol.

The Buhoma Community Walk starts at the Buhoma Community Rest Camp and goes up to the Batwa-Pygmy community for 3 hours. The walk is very informative and rewarding. Nature walks are an enriching activity for both the local communities and visitors.

What to see during buhoma Community Walk in Bwindi Impenetrable National Park

  • The walk will expose you to the lifestyle of the locals; you will be given a chance to experience their lifestyle and learn about what you didn’t know about African ways.
  • Visit craft shops and the women that make them; you get a chance to see every step of craft making and weaving baskets. You can buy some crafts to take to loved ones back home and for yourself; in this way you will be supporting the locals because this is their source of income.
  • Visit farmlands; you can see locals nurturing their crops; locals can even grab fresh organic fruit straight from the tree. When you visit in the harvest season, you experience the tea picking process and see how the newest leaves are picked  with lots of skill. You can even buy and carry some tea back home to enjoy fresh tea with family and friends.
  • Visit the River Muyaga; this is where lots of women and children go to wash clothes and fetch water for domestic use. It was a great experience to watch how these locals maintain clean clothes despite not having washing machines. At the river, you can also enjoy multiple colored butterflies.
  • Visit banana plantations, where local brewing also takes place of a local gin called “Waragi.” Uganda is among the countries with the highest banana production in the world; you can get a chance to taste the local gin.
  • Visit a traditional healer; don’t get confused; this isn’t a witch but a person who uses local herbs from the forest to heal sickness of any kind. You will be amused by the great knowledge of this person.
  • Visit the Batwa Pygmy Community; these are believed to be the natives of Uganda; they originally inhabited Bwindi Impenetrable Forest where they lived as hunters and gatherers; however, they lost their home when the park was gazetted for gorilla conservation . These people will give you a taste of true African culture through local music, dance, and drama.
  • You will have the privilege of visiting a local school and learning more about the education journey in local African communities. You can donate to these through, but make sure to consult your guide before donating to ensure that your donations go into the right hands.
  • You will have a glimpse of the local’s domestic animals, like herds of cattle grazing, goats, and chickens. Your eyes should be wide open in order not to miss a sight of playful monkeys, birds, and more.
  • During the walk, you can ask your guide and visit a local home to watch how their local food is prepared and get a chance to taste African meals.

These 3 hours of walking through the Buhoma Community and visiting the Batwa people will unveil a lot you didn’t know about Africa.
