East Madi Wildlife Reserve
The East Madi Wildlife Reserve is located in Amuru district, north of Murchison Falls National Park in northwestern Uganda. The reserve has an area coverage of 831 sq km and covered with overlapping Zoka forest (blessed with diverse flora and Fauna), wet lands and savannah vegetation that inhabits over 50 mammal species, 181 species of birds, 374 plant species thus making it a great destination for a variety of wilderness activities and has great potential for tourism development.
The East Madi Wildlife reserve is blessed with wild animals like Sitatunga, Uganda Kobs, Hyenas, Leopards, Lions and bird species like Blue Monkey, Colobus monkey, Red-tail monkeys, Vervet monkeys among others. The bird species in the reserve include the rare shoebill stock, Pied King fisher, Rock Pranticole, Giant heron, Yellow-throated leaf, Grey-crowned cranes, Giant kingfisher, read throated bee-eater among others. The reserve is under the management of the Uganda Wildlife Authority, working hand in hand with the ministry of Tourism, wildlife and Antiquities.

The reserve was established in 2002 on the Statutory Instrument.

Wildlife Viewing
This is the best activity to carry out in the reserve, tourists get a chance to get a close encounter with the reserve’s wildlife like Sitatunga, Uganda Kobs, Hyenas, Leopard, Lions and bird species like Blue Monkey, Colobus monkey, Red-tail monkeys, Vervet monkeys among others.
Birding
Bird watching is the second-best activity to carry out in East Madi Wildlife reserve, the reserve is a bird’s paradise with countless numbers of bird species like shoebill stock, Pied King fisher, Rock Pranticole, Giant heron, Yellow-throated leaf, Grey-crowned cranes, Giant kingfisher, read throated bee-eater among others.
Nature Walks
Nature walks are another way to spot the park’s wildlife… this time round on foot, nature walks are done on the outskirts of the reserve where tourists get a chance to spot the reserve’s small animal species like primates, bird species, Uganda Kobs among others.
How to get to East Madi Wildlife Reserve
The reservation can be accessed by road from Kampala via the Masaka-Mbarara highway for approximately 300km (5-6 hours’ drive).
Best time to visit the East Madi Wildlife Reserve
The reserve is open to visitors all year round but the best time to visit the reserve is in the dry season between the months of June to September and December to February.
