Forest Walks in Bwindi Impenetrable Forest, besides Gorilla Trekking, Bwindi Impenetrable National Park offers excellent ways to explore and enjoy the park’s unique features, one of the many being forest/nature walks. Nature walks are simply an activity of exploring the park on foot. It is a more relaxed and rewarding experience where one gets a chance to enjoy a close encounter with the park’s rewarding biodiversity like seeing various primates, different tree species, butterflies, bird life among others.

Nature walks offer you a great chance to explore Uganda’s oldest rainforest. This activity is guided by experienced guides who are knowledgeable about the park and know the most rewarding trails to use. Each sector of Bwindi Impenetrable National Park has fantastic hiking trails with unique experiences, great opportunities to sightsee on trees, primates, bird species, butterflies and other organisms. Depending on the tourist’s desire, nature walks range from 30 minutes to 8-hour walks and usually start at 9 in the morning and at 2 after lunch.

Nature walks in Buhoma

Buhoma sector is near Queen Elizabeth National park and be access via the Ishasha sector with ease.

Nature walks in Buhoma sector start from Buhoma Community Rest Camp and take you to enjoy a broader biodiversity amidst Uganda’s oldest rainforest for 30 minutes, 3-8 hours. The sector has a number of trails to use during nature walks namely Waterfall Trail,  Mazubijiro Loop Trail, Rushura Hill Trail, Ivi River Walk they are all very rewarding though the best of them all is probably Waterfall Trail.

During nature walks, guides will give you stopovers at different viewpoints to enjoy magical views of the Virunga Mountains and take beautiful photos to keep the memories alive. Tourists take pride in sighting at Monkeys, Duikers, Waterfall, countless bird species and different tree species.

In Buhoma, it is very feasible to do nature walks on the same day of gorilla trekking.

Nature walk in Ruhija

Ruhija sector offers magical sightings of the park, surprisingly  unguided walks through the public road in the sector are allowed. While on the walk, tourists can spot L’Hoests’s  Monkeys. In Ruhija sector one can hike up to the highest point in the park (Rwamunyonyi peak) via the Bamboo Trail, while other trails include Mubwindi Swamp Trail.

Walks in Ruhija will reward you with beautiful views of the Virunga Ranges, especially Mount Muhavura on a clear day, views of the Canopy, countless bird species, Mubwindi Swamp, primates like L’Hoest’s monkeys, Red-tailed monkeys, Black and White Colobus Monkeys. Unlike Buhoma sector nature walks in Ruhija cannot be done on the same day as gorilla trekking.

Nature walk in Rushaga

Rushaga sector boasts a large vocal of chimpanzees yet they are seldomly seen during nature walks. Along the Water Trail, hikers will encounter bird life similar to that of Buhoma, primates like Blue monkeys, Red-tailed monkeys, L’Hoests monkeys, sight on the Ruhezanyenda River Valley.

Nature walks in Nkuringo

other trailheads, nature walks in Nkuringo are less appealing because of the steep  nature of the  descents and ascents. Though walks can be organized at the rates of UWA if hikers pick up the interest. Nkuringo Sector has great potential for hiking outside the forest because of its scenic surroundings, but possibilities for random explorations are pretty limited. Nteko Ridge’s steep nature reflects that pleasant strolls are possible either east towards Rubuguri or west along the ridge top road towards the Democratic Republic of Congo.
