Murchison Falls National Park

Murchison Falls National Park – Uganda’s Crown Jewel of Wilderness

Murchison Falls National Park, also known as Kabalega National Park, is Uganda’s oldest and largest protected area, situated in northwestern Uganda at the northern tip of the Albertine Rift Valley. It extends from the shores of Lake Albert and spans the Victoria Nile corridor to the dramatic Karuma Falls.

This iconic park covers 3,893 square kilometers, forming the core of the Murchison Falls Conservation Area, which includes the adjacent Bugungu and Karuma Wildlife Reserves. Murchison’s centerpiece—the roaring Murchison Falls—draws visitors from around the world as the Nile River crashes through an 8-meter gorge, plunging 45 meters into a thunderous spray known as the Devil’s Cauldron.

🎬 This park’s cinematic beauty was globally introduced in the film “The African Queen”, shot along the Nile and on Lake Albert.

🌍 Biodiversity and Ecosystems

The park is split by the Victoria Nile, which flows 115 km east to west, creating lush savannah to the north and riverine woodland and tropical forests to the south. Murchison is a designated Ramsar Wetland Site and supports:

  • 144 mammal species

  • 51 reptiles

  • 51 amphibians

  • Over 556 bird species
