Murchison Falls National Park

Murchison Falls National Park – Uganda’s Power and Wilderness Collide

Murchison Falls National Park (locally known as Kabalega National Park) is Uganda’s first and largest national park, located in the northwestern region on the edge of the Albertine Rift Valley. This iconic conservation area stretches from the shores of Lake Albert across the Victoria Nile to Karuma Falls, forming the heart of the Murchison Falls Conservation Area.

The park’s main attraction—Murchison Falls—is a thunderous spectacle where the Nile squeezes through an 8-meter gorge, plunging 45 meters into the “Devil’s Cauldron” below, forming rainbow-laced spray that can be seen and heard from afar. But what makes visitors stay longer is the diverse wildlife, rolling savannah, wetlands, and rich forest ecosystems.

🌍 History & Status

Established officially in 1952 under the National Parks Act, the park was first protected as Bunyoro Game Reserve after the sleeping sickness outbreak in the early 20th century. In 2005, it was recognized as a Lion Conservation Unit, and in 2006, it was declared a Ramsar Wetland Site under the Murchison Falls–Albert Delta Wetland System.

🎬 The park gained international fame through the classic film The African Queen, starring Humphrey Bogart, which was partly filmed here.
