Rise before dawn for one of Rwanda’s most exciting wildlife experiences. After an early breakfast, proceed to the park headquarters for a briefing by experienced park rangers before entering the ancient rainforest in search of the energetic chimpanzees that inhabit Nyungwe Forest.

Walking beneath towering mahogany trees, giant ferns, and tangled vines, you’ll hear the forest come alive with birdsong and the distant calls of primates echoing through the canopy. The trek may last anywhere from thirty minutes to several hours depending on the chimpanzees’ movements, making every encounter unique and rewarding.

Here, you’ll learn about gorilla behavior, conservation efforts, and the essential guidelines for safely visiting these magnificent great apes.

Accompanied by armed rangers and expert trackers, venture deep into the dense rainforest in search of one of Bwindi’s habituated gorilla families. The trek can last anywhere from one to six hours depending on the gorillas’ location, but every step through the ancient jungle is filled with incredible sights including colorful birds, butterflies, unique plant species, and other forest wildlife.

The moment you come face-to-face with a mountain gorilla family is truly unforgettable. Spend a magical hour observing these gentle giants as they feed, groom, play, and interact naturally within their forest home. Watching a massive silverback calmly protect his family or playful youngsters tumbling through the vegetation is an experience that leaves lasting memories.

Day 7: Batwa Cultural Experience & Transfer to Lake Bunyonyi

Days 9–23 | Mount Meru & Mount Kilimanjaro Adventure Tanzania Mountain Expeditions

Following your unforgettable primate experiences in Rwanda and Uganda, your adventure now shifts to Tanzania, where two of Africa’s most spectacular mountain expeditions await. Before attempting Africa’s highest mountain, you will first climb the magnificent Mount Meru, an ideal acclimatization trek renowned for its breathtaking scenery, abundant wildlife, and spectacular summit views of Mount Kilimanjaro. After a well-earned recovery day, you’ll begin the iconic eight-day Lemosho Route on Mount Kilimanjaro, widely regarded as the most scenic and successful route to Uhuru Peak. Day 9: Rest Day in Moshi – Preparation for Mount Meru

After arriving in Moshi the previous evening, today has been intentionally reserved as a recovery and preparation day before your mountain adventure begins. Nestled at the base of Mount Kilimanjaro, Moshi is a charming town surrounded by coffee plantations and lush countryside, offering magnificent views of Africa’s tallest mountain on clear days.

Following breakfast, you’ll meet your professional mountain guide for a comprehensive briefing on the Mount Meru trek. Your guide will explain the daily itinerary, discuss altitude awareness, review safety procedures, and inspect your trekking equipment to ensure you are fully prepared for the climb. Any missing gear can easily be rented from reputable outdoor outfitters in town.

Prepare for Mount Meru Climb (4 Days)
Day 10: Momella Gate to Miriakamba Hut

After an early breakfast, depart Moshi for the scenic drive to Arusha National Park, where your Mount Meru adventure begins at Momella Gate. Upon completing park registration, you’ll be introduced to your armed park ranger, who accompanies every group throughout the climb due to the abundant wildlife found on the lower slopes of the mountain.

Unlike many mountain treks around the world, Mount Meru offers the unique opportunity to hike through landscapes inhabited by wild animals. As you begin your ascent, keep an eye out for giraffes gracefully feeding on acacia trees, buffalo grazing across the open grasslands, warthogs darting through the bushes, bushbucks, baboons, and the striking black-and-white colobus monkeys swinging through the forest canopy. The trail gradually enters a lush montane rainforest alive with birdsong, colorful butterflies, and towering ancient trees draped in moss.

The steady climb through this rich ecosystem provides a wonderful introduction to high-altitude trekking without being overly strenuous. Today’s trail climbs steadily through dense montane forest before emerging into giant heather and moorland vegetation, where enormous lobelias and giant groundsels create an almost prehistoric landscape unique to East Africa’s high mountains.

As you gain elevation, breathtaking views begin to unfold across Arusha National Park and the surrounding plains below. On particularly clear days, the snow-capped summit of Mount Kilimanjaro appears majestically in the distance, providing a glimpse of the challenge that lies ahead later in your journey.

By early afternoon, you’ll arrive at Saddle Hut, located at 3,570 meters between Little Meru and the main summit. After lunch and a short rest, you’ll undertake an optional acclimatization hike to Little Meru. This short excursion significantly improves your body’s adaptation to altitude while rewarding you with spectacular panoramic views over the surrounding volcanic landscapes.

Return to Saddle Hut for dinner before retiring early in preparation for the summit ascent.

Day 12: Summit Socialist Peak (4,566 m) and Descend to Miriakamba Hut

Your summit day begins shortly after midnight under a sky illuminated by countless stars. Equipped with headlamps, you’ll carefully make your way along the narrow crater ridge toward Socialist Peak, the highest point on Mount Meru. This exhilarating ascent passes dramatic volcanic cliffs and offers breathtaking views into Meru’s enormous ash cone below.

As dawn approaches, the eastern horizon begins to glow with brilliant shades of orange and gold, revealing one of Africa’s most spectacular sunrises. Standing atop Socialist Peak at 4,566 meters, you’ll be rewarded with unforgettable panoramic views stretching across northern Tanzania. To the east, Mount Kilimanjaro rises magnificently above the clouds, while the vast plains of Arusha National Park extend endlessly below.

After celebrating your successful summit and capturing memorable photographs, begin your descent back to Saddle Hut for a well-earned brunch before continuing down through the changing vegetation zones to Miriakamba Hut. Although the descent is long, the lower altitude brings renewed energy and comfort after the demanding summit climb.

Spend your final evening on Mount Meru reflecting on your accomplishment while enjoying a delicious dinner prepared by your mountain crew.

Day 13: Descend to Momella Gate and Return to Moshi

After breakfast, begin the final descent through the lush rainforest back toward Momella Gate. During the descent, there is another excellent opportunity to observe wildlife including giraffes, buffalo, antelope, monkeys, and a remarkable variety of birdlife inhabiting Arusha National Park.

The fresh mountain air, beautiful waterfalls, and peaceful forest trails make for a relaxing conclusion to your Mount Meru expedition. Upon reaching the park gate, you’ll receive your Mount Meru summit certificate before bidding farewell to your dedicated mountain crew.

Transfer back to Moshi, where a hot shower, comfortable bed, and delicious dinner await after four rewarding days on the mountain.

Day 14: Recovery Day in Moshi

Following your successful Mount Meru ascent, today has been reserved for complete rest and recovery before beginning the Mount Kilimanjaro expedition. This recovery period is an important part of the itinerary, allowing your muscles to recuperate while preserving the acclimatization benefits gained during the Meru climb.

You may spend the day relaxing at your hotel, enjoying a massage, visiting one of Moshi’s renowned coffee estates, or simply taking a leisurely walk through town. Day 15: Lemosho Gate to Mti Mkubwa Camp

After breakfast, drive to Londorossi Gate where park formalities are completed before continuing to the Lemosho trailhead. The adventure begins in lush montane rainforest, where towering trees, dense vegetation, and abundant wildlife create a magical atmosphere.

The relatively gentle hike allows you to ease comfortably into the expedition while observing colorful birds, blue monkeys, and black-and-white colobus monkeys along the trail. By late afternoon, you’ll arrive at Mti Mkubwa Camp (“Big Tree Camp”), nestled beneath towering forest trees.

Day 16: Mti Mkubwa to Shira 1 Camp

Day 21: Summit Uhuru Peak (5,895m) and Descend to Mweka Camp

Today marks the pinnacle of your East African adventure and one of the most rewarding achievements of your lifetime. Shortly before midnight, you will wake to a light snack and hot drinks before beginning your final ascent toward the Roof of Africa. Equipped with headlamps and warm layers, you’ll set off under a sky illuminated by countless stars, climbing slowly across the volcanic scree slopes in complete silence except for the encouragement of your experienced mountain guides.

The climb is physically demanding but incredibly rewarding. As you steadily ascend, you’ll pass Stella Point on the crater rim just before dawn. Here, you’ll pause briefly to witness one of the most breathtaking sunrises imaginable as golden light illuminates the glaciers, volcanic crater, and endless plains stretching far below. From Stella Point, continue along the snow-covered crater rim for the final push to Uhuru Peak (5,895 meters)—the highest point in Africa.

Standing atop Uhuru Peak is an unforgettable moment of triumph and celebration. Surrounded by ancient glaciers and panoramic views stretching across Tanzania and Kenya, you’ll have ample time to take photographs, celebrate with your team, and reflect on the incredible journey that brought you to Africa’s highest summit.

After your summit celebration, begin the long descent back to Barafu Camp for a well-deserved brunch before continuing downhill through the alpine desert to Mweka Camp. Descending to a lower altitude greatly improves recovery, and despite the long day, you’ll enjoy a sense of immense accomplishment as you spend your final night on the mountain.

Day 23: Recovery Day in Moshi

After conquering Mount Kilimanjaro, today has been intentionally reserved for complete rest and recovery before embarking on your wildlife safari. This break allows your body to recuperate after the demanding summit expedition while ensuring you fully enjoy the next stage of your adventure.

Sleep in, enjoy a leisurely breakfast, and spend the day at your own pace. You may relax by the hotel, visit a local coffee plantation, explore Moshi’s lively markets, indulge in a spa treatment, or simply admire views of Mount Kilimanjaro from the comfort of your hotel.

Your safari guide will meet you later in the day to provide a briefing about the upcoming Northern Tanzania Safari, including the incredible wildlife and landscapes you can expect to experience.

Day 24: Tarangire National Park
