Overview
Nestled in central Uganda, Lake Kyoga (Kioga) is a vast shallow lake that forms a crucial part of Africa’s Great Lakes system. While it is not classified among the Great Lakes of Africa, it plays a vital role in Uganda’s ecosystem, culture, and economy.
Geography and Formation
Lake Kyoga lies north of Lake Victoria, acting as a passage for the Nile River as it flows from Lake Victoria to Lake Albert. The name “Kyoga” (Kioga) comes from Lunyoro and means “a place of bathing.”
Key Features of Lake Kyoga
📍 Location: Central Uganda
📏 Size: 1,720 km² (660 square miles)
📈 Elevation: 1,033 meters (3,389 feet)
🌊 Depth: Maximum 5.7 meters (19 feet), but most areas are shallow (3 meters deep)
Much of the lake is covered with vegetation, including floating papyrus islands and water lilies. Around 95% of its swampy shoreline is dominated by invasive species like water hyacinth and papyrus, making navigation difficult in some areas.
Seasonal Lakes Connected to Kyoga

Kyoga’s floating papyrus islands are a unique attraction, drifting across the lake and creating ever-changing landscapes worth exploring.
Lake Kyoga’s Hydrology
