Ranked among the 8th Wonders of the Natural World, the majestic Ngorongoro Crater is a breathtakingly beautiful, ancient caldera nestled within the Ngorongoro Conservation Area, a designated UNESCO World Heritage Site. Here, Africa’s most iconic creatures — including the legendary Big Five — roam freely alongside cheetahs, wildebeests, zebras, giraffes, and more.

If you’ve been dreaming of the perfect safari in Tanzania, Ngorongoro Crater is a must-add to your itinerary. This guide covers everything you need to know to make your visit unforgettable — from how to get there, to wildlife you’ll encounter, entrance fees, and the best things to do.

Where is Ngorongoro Crater?

Ngorongoro Crater lies in northern Tanzania, inside the Ngorongoro Conservation Area (NCA) — one of Africa’s top safari destinations.

Your journey typically begins in Arusha City, about 170 km (a 3-hour drive) from Ngorongoro. While Arusha has a small domestic airport, most international travelers arrive at Kilimanjaro International Airport (JRO), located roughly an hour’s drive from Arusha.

From Arusha:

  • Drive 3 hours to Karatu, the last major town before the NCA.
  • Then it’s about 30 minutes to Loduare Gate, the main entrance to the conservation area.

For self-drive safaris, rental cars are available either at Kilimanjaro Airport or in Arusha. However, if you’re joining a guided safari, all logistics will be handled for you — no need to worry about navigation.

Entry Fees to Ngorongoro Crater

Fees for the Ngorongoro Conservation Area are as follows:

  • $71 USD per day – Foreign non-resident adults
  • $24 USD per day – Children aged 5 to 15
  • Free – Children under 5
  • $295 USD per vehicle (up to 7 passengers) to descend into the crater

Note: These are single-entry, 24-hour passes. Exiting and re-entering after 24 hours will require new tickets.
