Your journey typically begins in Arusha City, about 170 km (a 3-hour drive) from Ngorongoro. While Arusha has a small domestic airport, most international travelers arrive at Kilimanjaro International Airport (JRO), located roughly an hour’s drive from Arusha.
From Arusha:
- Drive 3 hours to Karatu, the last major town before the NCA.
- Then it’s about 30 minutes to Loduare Gate, the main entrance to the conservation area.
For self-drive safaris, rental cars are available either at Kilimanjaro Airport or in Arusha. However, if you’re joining a guided safari, all logistics will be handled for you — no need to worry about navigation.
