Akagera National Park – The Ultimate Safari Destination in Rwanda
Overview of Akagera National Park
Akagera National Park is one of the oldest national parks in Africa and the largest savanna park in Rwanda. Located in the eastern part of the country along the Rwanda-Tanzania border, the park spans 1,122 km² (433 sq. mi). It derives its name from the Akagera River, which flows along its eastern boundary, feeding into Lake Ihema and several smaller lakes, including Lake Gishanju, Lake Mihindi, Lake Rwanyakizinga, and Lake Shakani.
This network of lakes and swamps forms the largest protected wetland in Central and East Africa, covering a third of the park. The park’s map is so iconic that it is featured on a Rwandan stamp.
Akagera National Park boasts breathtaking landscapes, including savanna grasslands, woodlands, rolling hills, forests, and wetlands. It is home to a wide variety of wildlife, including:
- Big Five: Lions, elephants, buffaloes, leopards, and rhinos (reintroduced).
- Other mammals: Rothschild giraffes, zebras, hippos, crocodiles, hyenas, antelopes, and more.
- Primates: Olive baboons, vervet monkeys, silver monkeys, and bush babies.
- Birdlife: Over 500 bird species, including the rare shoebill stork, papyrus gonolek, African fish eagle, crowned cranes, and marabou stork.
History of Akagera National Park
Established in 1934 by the Belgian government, Akagera was initially a 2,500 km² forest reserve created to protect its rich biodiversity. However, after the 1994 Rwandan Genocide, returning refugees settled in the park, leading to deforestation, poaching, and habitat loss. Nearly 25% of the park was destroyed, and key species like lions and rhinos were wiped out—the last rhino was seen in 2007.
Conservation Efforts & Revival
In 2009, the Rwanda Development Board (RDB) partnered with African Parks Network to restore Akagera. Key milestones include:
- 2015: Reintroduction of 7 lions from South Africa after 15 years of absence.
- 2017: Translocation of 18 Eastern black rhinos from South Africa and Europe.
- Anti-poaching measures: Increased ranger patrols, canine units, and aerial surveillance.
Today, Akagera is a success story in wildlife conservation, with thriving populations of lions, rhinos, and other endangered species.
