Overview

Lake Bunyonyi, a breathtaking freshwater lake in southwestern Uganda’s Kabale district, lies near the border of Uganda and Rwanda. The name “Bunyonyi” means “place of many little birds” in the local language, as the lake is home to numerous bird species. Unlike other lakes in the region, Lake Bunyonyi is bilharzia-free and has no crocodiles or hippos, making it safe for swimming and water sports.

With an elevation of 1,962 m (6,437 ft) above sea level, the lake stretches 25 km (15.5 mi) long and 7 km (4.3 mi) wide. Its depth remains a topic of debate—while scientists estimate it at 40 m (130 ft), locals believe it plunges to 900 m (3,000 ft), potentially making it the second deepest lake in Africa.

Lake Bunyonyi is part of the Nile basin system, alongside Lake Mutanda and Lake Mulehe, and features 29 scattered islands. Its picturesque landscape is surrounded by steep terraced hills, lush greenery, and the majestic Virunga Mountains in the background.

Wildlife and Birdlife

As its name suggests, Lake Bunyonyi is a paradise for bird lovers, with over 200 bird species found around the lake, swamps, and islands. Some commonly spotted species include:

  • Grey-crowned cranes
  • African harrier hawks
  • Herons and egrets
  • Pied kingfishers
  • Levaillant’s cuckoo
  • Cardinal woodpecker

The lake also supports various aquatic species, including Nile tilapia, Nile perch, mudfish, crayfish, and mirror carp.

Major Attractions

1. Akampene (Punishment Island)

One of the most famous islands on Lake Bunyonyi, Punishment Island (Akampene) holds a dark history. The practice was later abolished during colonial rule.
