Where is Shira Plateau?

The Shira Plateau is a vast, elevated expanse on the western slopes of Mount Kilimanjaro, sitting at an altitude between 11,500 to 13,000 feet (3,500 to 3,960 meters). This scenic plateau lies west of Kibo—the central volcanic cone—and is framed by the steep ridges that define the mountain’s rugged western face.

How Was Shira Plateau Formed?

The Shira Plateau is a remnant of one of Kilimanjaro’s earliest volcanic cones. Millions of years ago, during a period of intense geological activity caused by continental rifting, three volcanic cones—Shira, Mawenzi, and Kibo—formed.

The Shira cone grew to a towering height of over 16,000 feet (4,877 meters). Around 500,000 years ago, its volcanic activity ceased, and the cone collapsed into a massive caldera due to erosion and gravity. This collapse created the broad, flat terrain we now know as the Shira Plateau. In contrast, Kibo and Mawenzi still retain their cone-like shapes and continue to dominate the skyline.

What is the Climate Like?

The Shira Plateau falls within Kilimanjaro’s heath and moorland ecological zone, characterized by:

  • Daytime temperatures: Around 10°C (50°F)
  • Nighttime temperatures: Can fall below freezing
  • Annual precipitation: Between 530 to 1,300 mm (21 to 51 inches)

The plateau can be chilly and misty, especially in the early mornings and evenings.

Flora and Fauna of Shira Plateau

The plateau hosts a unique variety of alpine vegetation, thanks to its rich volcanic soil. Visitors can expect to see:

  • Giant heathers
  • Groundsels
  • Lobelias

Though large animals are rare, small mammals and bird species are common. On rare occasions, elephants, buffalo, and elands can be spotted grazing at the plateau’s edge.

Which Routes Visit Shira Plateau?

Several popular Kilimanjaro routes traverse the Shira Plateau, making it accessible to trekkers:

  • Shira Route
  • Lemosho Route
  • Northern Circuit Route

While the Machame Route approaches from the south and does not fully cross the plateau, it does pass nearby.

Key Campsites on the Plateau

  • Simba Camp – 11,800 ft (3,595 m) – Shira Route
  • Shira 1 Camp – 11,500 ft (3,505 m) – Lemosho and Northern Circuit
  • Shira 2 Camp – 12,500 ft (3,810 m) – Shira, Lemosho, Northern Circuit

The trail across the plateau is relatively flat and compact, offering trekkers a gentle ascent and often spectacular early views of Kilimanjaro’s summit, weather permitting.

What is the Shira Cathedral?

The Shira Cathedral is a jagged ridge located on the southern rim of the Shira caldera, rising to around 12,200 feet (3,720 meters). Its dramatic form, shaped by ancient volcanic activity and erosion, resembles the spire of a Gothic cathedral—hence its name.

Hiking to Shira Cathedral

This side trek is typically undertaken en route to Shira 2 Camp and offers:

  • Challenging terrain with rocky paths and sparse alpine vegetation
  • A steep final ascent
  • Breathtaking panoramic views from the base of the Cathedral

It’s a worthwhile detour for climbers looking to add a bit of adventure to their acclimatization hike.
