Day 1: Kampala/Entebbe then Transfer to Bwindi

Your driver-guide will collect you from your hotel in Kampala or Entebbe. The early start is essential this is one of Uganda’s longest road transfers, and you want to arrive before dark. The drive follows the Kampala–Masaka–Mbarara–Kabale highway, a paved route that winds through some of Uganda’s most beautiful countryside. About two hours into the drive, you’ll stop at the Uganda Equator in Kayabwe. This is the classic photo opportunity: standing with one foot in the Northern Hemisphere and one in the Southern. Local vendors sell crafts and souvenirs, and there’s usually a demonstration of the Coriolis effect using water and a funnel.

Continuing south, you enter the Ankole cattle-farming region, famous for its long-horned Ankole cattle  an iconic symbol of Ugandan pastoral culture. The landscape shifts from rolling savannah to increasingly terraced hills as you approach the Kigezi Highlands. You’ll stop for lunch in Mbarara or another town along the route. Most safari vehicles pause at a known restaurant where you can stretch, eat, and use restrooms. Arrive at your lodge near Bwindi. Check in, freshen up, and rest. Your guide will brief you on tomorrow’s gorilla trek what to wear, what to expect, and the logistics of the morning.

Meals: Lunch and dinner included.

Day 2: Mountain Gorilla Trekking and Batwa Cultural Experience

This is the day you’ve been waiting for. 6:30 AM – Breakfast

Fuel up today requires energy. Wear long trousers, long-sleeved shirts, sturdy hiking boots, and gardening gloves to protect your hands from nettles and thorns. Bring a rain jacket, 2–3 liters of water, and your camera with spare batteries. Drive to the park headquarters for registration and briefing. Rangers check your permit and passport (bring a photocopy as backup). You’ll be assigned to a gorilla family maximum 8 visitors per family. The trek length varies dramatically  from 30 minutes to 4+ hours depending on where the gorillas nested the previous night. You’ll walk with a ranger and trackers through dense, humid rainforest. The terrain can be steep and muddy, and the guides often use machetes to clear paths.

A crucial tip: Hire a porter at the trailhead for approximately $15 USD. Porters carry your backpack during the trek and look after it while you’re with the gorillas. This service directly supports the local community and is strongly recommended, even if you feel physically capable of carrying your own bag.

Once the trackers locate the gorilla family, you’ll be directed to your viewing position. You must wear a face mask during the encounter to protect the gorillas from human illnesses. Keep a distance of at least 7 meters from the gorillas. Then, you have one unforgettable hour to observe them: the silverback protecting his family, mothers nursing infants, juveniles playfully tumbling through the vegetation. Watch them feed, rest, groom, and interact. The time passes far too quickly.

After the Trek, return to the park headquarters to receive your gorilla trekking certificate. Then transfer back to your lodge for lunch and rest. Depending on your return time from the forest, you’ll visit the Batwa community  the indigenous forest people who lived in Bwindi for thousands of years before the national park was created in 1991.

What You’ll Experience:

Led by Batwa guides, this is not a staged performance  it’s an authentic sharing of traditional knowledge:

  • Forest walk through a pocket forest, learning which plants were used for medicine

  • Fire-making demonstration without matches, a skill passed down over generations

  • Hunting techniques using traditional bows and arrows

  • Shelter building from leaves and branches

  • Honey-gathering with traditional tools

  • Music and dance, with handmade instruments  guests are often invited to join

You’ll also learn about the Batwa’s displacement when Bwindi became a protected area, and how cultural tourism now helps preserve their heritage while generating income for their community.

Meals: Breakfast, packed lunch, and dinner included.
