You’ll walk alongside southern white rhinos at Ziwa Rhino Sanctuary, cruise the Victoria Nile to the base of Murchison Falls, and stand at the top of the gorge where the entire river squeezes through a 7-meter gap before plunging 43 meters into the Devil’s Cauldron.

Duration: 3 days / 2 nights
Route: Kampala/Entebbe → Ziwa Rhino Sanctuary → Murchison Falls National Park → Kampala/Entebbe

Brief Itinerary

  • Day 1: Kampala/Entebbe → Ziwa Rhino Sanctuary → Murchison Falls
  • Day 2: Morning Game Drive + Nile Boat Cruise + Top of the Falls
  • Day 3: Murchison Falls → Return to Kampala/Entebbe

Day 1: Kampala/Entebbe, Ziwa Rhino Sanctuary then Murchison Falls

Our Usoke driver-guide will collect you from your hotel in Kampala or Entebbe. The early start is intentional: you’ll travel north on the Kampala–Gulu Highway before traffic builds, and you’ll reach Ziwa before the midday heat. The drive takes you through Luwero, Kafu, and Masindi trading towns where you can stretch your legs and buy snacks. The landscape shifts from urban sprawl to rural farmland to open savannah as you approach the sanctuary.

Ziwa Rhino Sanctuary is the only place in Uganda where you can track rhinos on foot. The sanctuary was established in 2005 by Rhino Fund Uganda with a clear mission: reintroduce southern white rhinos to a country where they had been extinct since the 1980s due to poaching and conflict. After a safety briefing from your ranger, you’ll set out on foot through 70 square kilometers of savannah and wetland. The walk typically lasts 1.5 to 2.5 hours, depending on where the rhinos are located that day.

You’ll be accompanied by armed rangers who track the rhinos and ensure your safety. As you approach, you’ll observe these massive animals some weighing over 2,000 kg  grazing, resting, or moving slowly through the bush. Your guide will explain their behavior, feeding habits, and the conservation program that brought them back from local extinction. The sanctuary is also home to Uganda kobs, bushbucks, monkeys, and a wide variety of bird species. The walk is paced comfortably, with plenty of stops for photos and observation.

Wear sturdy walking shoes, long trousers, and a hat. Bring sunscreen, insect repellent, and drinking water. The walk is suitable for most fitness levels it’s a relaxed pace with time to stop and observe.

Lunch: A packed lunch or a meal at a nearby diner (such as Kabalega Diner) is typically included. After lunch, continue north to Murchison Falls National Park. The remaining drive takes approximately 2–3 hours, passing through Pakwach before reaching the Tangi Gate area. Arrival at Your Lodge, check in, freshen up, and relax. If you’re staying at a lodge near the Nile, you may spot wildlife antelope, warthogs, or even elephants  moving through the bush near your accommodation before dinner.

Meals: Lunch and dinner included.

  • Budget: Ikorom Safari Lodge
  • Midrange: Sambiya River Lodge

Day 2: Morning Game Drive, Nile Boat Cruise and  Top of the Falls

This is the fullest day of the safari. You’ll cover three signature Murchison experiences: a dawn game drive, a river cruise to the base of the falls, and a hike to the top of the falls. Morning game drive (6:30 AM – 10:30 AM), leave the lodge at first light. The northern bank of Murchison Falls National Park is open savannah ideal for wildlife viewing. Morning is when animals are most active, before the heat of the day sets in.

What You’ll Search For:

Murchison is home to 76 species of mammals and over 450 bird species. On a typical morning drive, you have strong chances of seeing:

  • Lions

  • Elephants

  • Giraffes

  • Buffaloes

  • Uganda kobs

  • Warthogs, waterbucks, hartebeests

  • Leopards

Your guide will select the best routes based on recent wildlife movements. Common circuits include the Buligi, Albert, and Victoria tracks. Return to Lodge: Back for brunch/lunch and a short rest.

Nile Boat Cruise to the Base of the Falls (Afternoon, 2:00 PM – 5:00 PM): The boat cruise is Murchison’s signature activity and for good reason. You’ll board at Paraa jetty and head upstream along the Victoria Nile toward the base of the falls. The cruise lasts 2 to 3 hours. The boat moves at a relaxed pace, hugging the riverbanks where wildlife gathers.

What You’ll See:

  • Hippos: large pods, often with mothers and calves

  • Nile crocodiles: basking on the banks

  • Elephants: frequently at the water’s edge, drinking and bathing

  • Buffaloes, giraffes, warthogs, waterbucks: along the shoreline

  • Waterbirds: kingfishers, fish eagles, herons, cormorants, bee-eaters

As you approach the base of the falls, the river narrows and the current strengthens. The boat will bring you close enough to see the spray rising from where the Nile crashes through the gorge. The roar is constant, and on windy days, you’ll feel the mist. The Falls from Below, the perspective is dramatic a wall of white water thundering through a narrow rock gap, with cliffs rising on either side.

Boat Cruise Cost: $30 USD per person for foreign non-residents.

After the boat cruise, your vehicle will meet you for the drive to the Top of the Falls. This is a completely different perspective from the boat cruise and arguably more dramatic. At the top, you stand on the edge where the entire Victoria Nile a river that has already traveled hundreds of kilometers is forced through a 7-meter-wide gap in the rock before plunging 43 meters into the Devil’s Cauldron. The sound is thunderous. The spray rises continuously. The power is almost incomprehensible. There’s a well-marked trail from the top down toward the river, with viewpoints along the way. The upper stretch offers views of Uhuru Falls, a smaller secondary waterfall created by floods in 1962.

Historical Note: The falls were featured in the 1951 film The African Queen starring Humphrey Bogart and Katharine Hepburn. Explorer Sir Samuel Baker, who named the falls after Royal Geographical Society president Roderick Murchison, first witnessed them in 1864. Return to Lodge: After the falls, return to your lodge for dinner and overnight.

Meals: Breakfast, lunch, and dinner included.

Day 3: Murchison Falls then Return to Kampala/Entebbe

Enjoy breakfast at your lodge and check out. If time allows and your lodge is near the park boundary, you may have one final short game drive as you exit the park. The drive back to Kampala or Entebbe follows the same route, with a lunch stop along the way (typically in Masindi or another town). You’ll arrive at your drop-off point in the late afternoon or early evening.
