Detailed Itinerary

Day 1: Transfer to Kibale National Park & Bigodi Wetland Sanctuary

Your journey begins with a pickup from Kampala or Entebbe Airport by your Usoke Explorers driver-guide. Embark on a scenic drive to Kibale National Park via the Fort Portal–Mubende road, passing through Uganda’s lush countryside, tea plantations, and breathtaking crater lakes.

Upon arrival, check in at your lodge and relax before heading out for an evening guided nature walk in Bigodi Wetland Sanctuary, located just a short drive from the park . This community-managed wetland is a shining example of community-based ecotourism . The sanctuary is famous for its rich biodiversity, with over 200 bird species recorded, including the magnificent Great Blue Turaco, a favorite among birdwatchers . You may also spot red colobus monkeys, black-and-white colobus monkeys, and other primate species.

Day 2: Chimpanzee Trekking & Optional Habituation Experience

After an early breakfast, head to the Kanyanchu Visitor Centre for a briefing on chimpanzee trekking guidelines. The briefing starts at 8:00 AM, after which you will be divided into small groups of up to 8 trekkers and assigned a chimpanzee family to track . The trek through the forest lasts between 2 to 4 hours, depending on the movement of the chimpanzees.

Once located, you will spend one magical hour observing the chimpanzees in their natural habitat. Watch as they feed, groom, communicate, and swing through the trees . The guides are knowledgeable about the forest’s plant species and birdlife, making the trek both educational and immersive . The sighting probability is over 90% due to the well-habituated chimpanzee groups in Kanyanchu.

Afternoon Options:

• Birdwatching: Explore the Boardwalk Trail for species like the African Pitta, Green-Breasted Pitta, and Black Bee-eater.

• Chimpanzee Habituation Experience: For a deeper, more exclusive encounter, opt for the habituation experience. Unlike standard trekking,  allows you to spend up to 4 hours with a semi-habituated troop alongside researchers and trackers . The experience starts very early in the morning and includes following the chimps as they wake, feed, and move throughout the day. This is ideal for photographers, researchers, and those seeking a more intimate wildlife encounter . Permits for cost approximately $300, compared to $250 for standard trekking.

Day 3: Community Visit & Return to Kampala/Entebbe

Enjoy a relaxed breakfast before embarking on a community visit to experience the local culture of the Batooro and Bakiga people. Activities include traditional dance performances, tasting local food, and visiting local schools and churches . This cultural encounter provides insight into the traditions and daily life of the communities living around the park.

After this enriching experience, begin the return journey to Kampala or Entebbe. En route, stop at the famous Uganda Equator for lunch, photographs, and an opportunity to stand in both the Northern and Southern Hemispheres at the same time .

Upon arrival in Kampala or Entebbe, your driver-guide will drop you off at your hotel or the airport, marking the end of your chimpanzee trekking safari.
