Detailed Itinerary

Day 1: Transfer to Mgahinga Gorilla National Park

Your adventure begins with an early morning pick-up from your hotel in Kampala or Entebbe. Your professional driver-guide will brief you about the journey ahead before you set off for the scenic drive to southwestern Uganda. The journey takes you via the Masaka–Mbarara highway, with a stop at the Equator in Kayabwe for photos and to witness the famous water experiment demonstrating the Earth’s hemispheres. A second stop will be made in Mbarara City for lunch before continuing to Kisoro District. Arrive at Mgahinga Gorilla National Park in the late evening, with the magnificent Virunga Volcanoes coming into view. Check into your lodge for dinner and overnight, preparing for the challenging hike ahead.

Day 2: Hike Mount Sabinyo

Wake up early for a hearty breakfast and pack a lunch box, plenty of water, and essential supplies for the day. You will transfer to the Ntebeko Visitor Centre at the park headquarters for registration and a briefing . Hikers are required to arrive by 7:00–7:30 AM . After a briefing on trail conditions, safety protocols, and the mountain’s history, you will begin your ascent. The hike to the summit takes 6 to 8 hours depending on your group’s pace and the weather conditions . The trail passes through four distinct vegetation zones: bamboo forest, Hagenia-Hypericum forest, sub-alpine, and Afro-alpine moorland .

The Ascent:

First Stage (2 hours): Gentle incline through lush forest and bamboo zones, home to golden monkeys .
Second Stage: Steep volcanic ridges with numerous wooden ladders, some near-vertical. Gloves are highly recommended .
Summit: You will reach the highest point at 3,669 metres, standing at the meeting point of Uganda, Rwanda, and the DRC . On clear days, you can see Lake Kivu, Lake Bunyonyi, and the surrounding Virunga volcanoes .

Important Note: Rangers typically advise hikers to reach the summit by 1:00 PM to allow sufficient time for descent before dark . The descent can be just as challenging as the ascent, requiring concentration on the ladders and steep sections. After the hike, return to your lodge for a relaxed evening, dinner, and overnight stay.

Day 3: Return to Kampala/Entebbe or Kigali

After a leisurely breakfast, check out of your lodge and begin your journey back to Kampala or Entebbe. A lunch stop will be made en route. Upon arrival, your driver-guide will drop you off at your hotel, residence, or Entebbe International Airport for your departure flight.

Note: You may also choose to end your trip in Kigali, Rwanda, which is approximately a 3-hour drive from Mgahinga via the Cyanika border crossing . This is a convenient option for travellers continuing their journey in Rwanda or flying out of Kigali International Airport.

Hiking Mount Sabinyo is not a technical mountaineering expedition, but it is a demanding day hike . The trail is steep, with sections of loose volcanic scree, narrow ridgelines, and near-vertical wooden ladders . You need substantial cardiovascular endurance and sure-footedness.
