Detailed Itinerary

Day 1: Arrival in Kigali – City & Historical Tour

Upon arrival at Kigali International Airport, you are warmly welcomed by your Usoke Explorers guide and transferred to your hotel in the city.

After settling in, you will embark on a guided Kigali city tour, beginning with the Kigali Genocide Memorial. This is one of Rwanda’s most important sites, the final resting place for over 250,000 victims of the 1994 Genocide against the Tutsi. The exhibitions document Rwanda’s history through survivor testimonies, archives, and a memorial garden a sobering but essential experience for understanding modern Rwanda’s resilience and commitment to reconciliation.

The afternoon continues with visits to local craft markets where you can browse and purchase handmade Rwandan crafts intricate baskets, pottery, and traditional textiles. You’ll also enjoy a guided city drive through Kigali’s clean, vibrant streets, passing landmarks such as the Parliament building and the Convention Centre.

Day 2: Transfer to Volcanoes National Park

After breakfast, depart Kigali and drive north through Rwanda’s scenic countryside toward Volcanoes National Park, part of the Virunga Massif. The journey takes approximately 2.5 hours, winding through lush hills, terraced farmlands, and vibrant villages. The views are breathtaking rolling green landscapes that give Rwanda its nickname, the Land of a Thousand Hills.

Arrive at your lodge near the park and check in. The afternoon is at your leisure you can relax and enjoy the views of the Virunga Volcanoes, or take an optional nature walk around Musanze town to explore the local area and interact with residents.

Day 3: Gorilla Trekking Experience

This is the day you’ve been waiting for. Wake early for breakfast and transfer to the park headquarters for a briefing by Rwanda Development Board rangers. During this session, you will learn about gorilla trekking guidelines, safety rules, and conservation practices. You will be assigned to a habituated gorilla family group, each with its own unique story and characteristics.

The trek through the forest is challenging but deeply rewarding. Volcanoes National Park is covered in dense bamboo forest and volcanic slopes, and the terrain can be steep and muddy. Expert trackers lead the way, following signs of the gorillas’ overnight nests, feeding trails, and vocalisations. The trek can take anywhere from 1 to 6 hours or longer depending on the location of the gorilla family.

When you finally locate the gorillas, you will be allowed one unforgettable hour observing them in their natural habitat. Watch the silverback survey his family with quiet authority. Mothers cradle their infants. Juveniles tumble and play in the bamboo. The gorillas feed, groom, and interact, seemingly unaware of your presence. This is intimacy with nature at its most profound a moment that often brings tears and silence.

After the trek, return to the lodge for relaxation. You may choose to visit the nearby Dian Fossey gravesite or simply rest and reflect on the day’s incredible encounter.

Day 4: Cultural Immersion & Community Tourism

Today is dedicated to Rwanda’s rich cultural heritage. Your journey begins with a visit to the Batwa community, the indigenous forest people who lived in the Virunga forests for thousands of years before conservation efforts displaced them. The Batwa share their ancient forest traditions hunting techniques, gathering practices, and survival skills passed down through generations. You’ll learn about their deep connection to the forest, their struggles, and their ongoing efforts to preserve their culture in a changing world.

After this intimate cultural encounter, continue to the Iby’Iwacu Cultural Village, a community-led tourism initiative that offers an authentic glimpse into Rwanda’s pre-colonial history. Here, you’ll be welcomed with traditional songs and dances. You’ll learn about Rwanda’s ancient monarchy, the role of the king, and the social structures that shaped Rwandan society. The village showcases traditional homesteads, craft-making, and storytelling, bringing Rwanda’s history to life.

The evening is yours to reflect on the day’s experiences while enjoying the stunning views of the Virunga Volcanoes.

Day 5: Return to Kigali & Departure

After breakfast, begin your journey back to Kigali. Depending on your flight schedule, you may have the opportunity to stop for lunch at a local restaurant or visit additional sites along the way. Upon arrival in Kigali, you will be transferred to Kigali International Airport for your departure flight, carrying with you memories of gorillas, cultural encounters, and Rwanda’s remarkable resilience.

Important Information

Gorilla Trekking Permits

Gorilla trekking permits in Rwanda cost $1,500 per person and must be booked well in advance. We strongly recommend booking permits at least 3–6 months before your intended travel date, especially during peak seasons.

Physical Fitness

Gorilla trekking requires a reasonable level of fitness. The terrain is steep and often muddy. We recommend preparing with light walking or hiking in the months leading up to your safari. Porters are available for hire at the park headquarters (approximately $20 per day) and are highly recommended.

• Long pants and long-sleeved shirts (to protect against nettles and insects)

• Sturdy, comfortable hiking boots (waterproof recommended)

• Rain jacket (the forest is often wet)

• Sunscreen and insect repellent

• Binoculars

• Camera with extra batteries (no flash allowed during gorilla trekking)
