Detailed Day-by-Day Itinerary
Day 1: Nyakalengija (1,615m) → Nyabitaba Hut (2,651m)
Estimated Hiking Time: 6–7 hours
The trek begins at the Rwenzori Mountaineering Services base in Nyakalengija. After registration, briefing, and crew introductions, the ascent starts gradually through cultivated farmland before entering Rwenzori Mountains National Park.
The trail follows the Mubuku River valley, crossing the Mahoma River, then climbs steadily through dense montane forest. Wildlife is frequently encountered here, including black-and-white colobus monkeys, blue monkeys, and diverse birdlife such as the colorful Rwenzori turaco.
A sustained ridge climb leads to Nyabitaba Hut, which offers sweeping views of the Mubuku Valley below.
Overnight at Nyabitaba Hut.
Day 2: Nyabitaba → John Matte Hut (3,505m)
Estimated Hiking Time: 7–8 hours
From Nyabitaba, descend through forest to the Kurt Shafer Bridge, where the Mubuku and Bujuku Rivers meet. The route then enters bamboo forest before transitioning into the heather zone.
The terrain becomes more demanding, with sections of moss-covered rocks and muddy stretches requiring careful footing. As altitude increases, the vegetation shifts to giant heather, lobelias, and groundsels.
After crossing boggy terrain in the upper valley, arrive at John Matte Hut, located in a scenic alpine basin beneath Mount Stanley and Mount Speke.
Overnight at John Matte Hut.
Day 3: John Matte Hut → Bujuku Hut (3,962m)
Estimated Hiking Time: 4–5 hours
Today’s trek crosses the Bujuku River and enters the Lower Bigo Bog — a distinctive Afro-alpine wetland dotted with giant lobelias. The trail requires steady movement across tussocks to avoid deep mud patches.
The Upper Bigo Bog gradually opens toward Lake Bujuku, one of the most picturesque alpine lakes in East Africa. The surrounding peaks of Mount Baker (south) and Mount Stanley (west) dominate the skyline.
Bujuku Hut is located in a narrow valley below Stuhlmann Pass and serves as an excellent acclimatization point.
Overnight at Bujuku Hut.
Day 4: Bujuku → Kitandara Hut (4,430m)
Estimated Hiking Time: 5–6 hours
Depart Bujuku and ascend west of Lake Bujuku through Groundsel Gully — a dramatic high-altitude zone characterized by giant groundsels and steep slopes.
At the junction below Mount Stanley, the trail diverges: right leads to Elena Hut (for Margherita Peak climbers), while the Central Circuit continues left toward Scott-Elliot Pass.
From Scott-Elliot Pass, enjoy expansive views over Bujuku Lake and Mount Speke. The trail then descends into the Kitandara Valley, passing the scenic Kitandara Lakes surrounded by alpine ridges.
Overnight at Kitandara Hut.
Day 5: Kitandara → Guy Yeoman Hut (3,261m)
Estimated Hiking Time: 6–7 hours
The day begins with a steep climb toward Freshfield Pass (4,282m), located on the southern flank of Mount Baker. From the pass, trekkers enjoy views extending into the Democratic Republic of Congo to the west and Mount Stanley to the north.
After crossing the pass, descend through alpine moss and rocky slopes. The trail passes Bujongolo Rock Shelter, historically used during the 1906 expedition of the Duke of Abruzzi.
Continue descending to Guy Yeoman Hut, located in a scenic valley along the Mubuku River.
Overnight at Guy Yeoman Hut.
Day 6: Guy Yeoman → Nyabitaba → Nyakalengija (1,615m)
Estimated Hiking Time: 7–8 hours
The final day descends below Guy Yeoman through the cliffs of Kichuchu before entering bamboo forest. The trail crosses the Mubuku River multiple times before reconnecting with Nyabitaba Hut.
From Nyabitaba, continue descending through the forested ridge to Nyakalengija, completing the Central Circuit loop.
Arrival is typically in the late afternoon.
