Detailed Itinerary
Day 1: Arrival in Kigali
Upon arrival at Kigali International Airport, you will be warmly received by your private driver-guide and transferred to your hotel. Depending on your arrival time, take a guided city tour that includes a visit to the Kigali Genocide Memorial, art galleries, and local craft markets. The Kigali Genocide Memorial is the final resting place for over 250,000 victims of the 1994 Genocide against the Tutsi and documents Rwanda’s history through survivor testimonies, archives, and a memorial garden. In the evening, enjoy a welcome dinner featuring gourmet cuisine while overlooking the city’s lights.

Day 2: Kigali City Tour and Transfer to Nyungwe National Park
After breakfast, embark on a guided Kigali city tour. Visit the Kigali Genocide Memorial for a deeply moving insight into Rwanda’s history and resilience. The memorial operates daily from 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM, with free entrance and optional guided tours.
Continue to local craft markets where you can browse and purchase handmade Rwandan crafts, including intricately woven baskets, pottery, and traditional textiles.
In the afternoon, depart Kigali and drive south to Nyungwe National Park. Along the way, stop at the King’s Palace Museum in Nyanza and the Ethnographic Museum in Huye to learn about Rwanda’s royal and cultural history. Arrive at Nyungwe in the late afternoon and check into your lodge surrounded by lush tea plantations and forested hills.

Day 3: Chimpanzee Trekking in Nyungwe
Wake before dawn for an early breakfast and head to the park headquarters for a briefing on chimpanzee trekking. Nyungwe is home to approximately 500 chimpanzees, with habituated troops available for trekking. Led by expert rangers, you will follow the sounds of the chimps through the montane rainforest and observe their fascinating social interactions as they leap and swing through the trees.
The trek can be challenging, with steep, muddy terrain requiring good fitness. Once located, you will spend up to one hour observing the chimps in their natural habitat. Nyungwe is one of Africa’s oldest rainforests and a sanctuary of stunning biodiversity, home to 13 species of primates.
In the afternoon, experience the famous Nyungwe Canopy Walk, a 200-metre suspended bridge 60 metres above the forest floor offering treetop views of primates and birdlife.

Day 4: Colobus Monkey Trek and Canopy Walk
After breakfast, set out for a colobus monkey trek where you will encounter large groups of these striking primates in the lush forest. Nyungwe is home to 400-strong troops of black-and-white Angolan colobus monkeys, as well as L’Hoest’s monkeys, mangabeys, and other primate species.
Later, take a guided nature walk to discover unique plant species, orchids, and colorful birdlife. Nyungwe boasts over 270 species of trees, more than 70 mammal species, and 275 bird species. In the afternoon, visit a nearby tea plantation to learn about Rwanda’s tea production and enjoy a tasting session.
Return to your lodge in the evening for a gourmet dinner, surrounded by the soothing sounds of the forest.

Day 5: Nyungwe to Lake Kivu
After breakfast, depart for the beautiful Lake Kivu in Kibuye, one of Africa’s great lakes. The journey offers panoramic views of rolling hills and green terraced landscapes. Upon arrival, check into your lakeside lodge and enjoy a relaxing afternoon.
Activities may include a private boat cruise to explore the islands, kayaking, or simply enjoying the sandy beaches. Lake Kivu is one of the African Great Lakes, offering stunning scenery and a tranquil atmosphere. End the day with a candlelit dinner featuring freshly caught fish from the lake.

Day 6: Lake Kivu to Volcanoes National Park – Cultural Visit
After a leisurely breakfast overlooking Lake Kivu, drive northwards to Volcanoes National Park. The majestic Virunga Volcanoes come into view as you approach, creating a dramatic landscape.
In the afternoon, enjoy a cultural visit to the Gorilla Guardians Village (formerly Iby’Iwacu Cultural Village), where you will engage with local communities through dance, drumming, and storytelling. The village combines all of Rwanda’s known cultural traditions, people, and history into one place for display and a personal experience. You’ll learn ancient hunting skills, try weaving baskets and mats, and experience the warmth of Rwandan hospitality. Many of the local performers, including the Batwa, were once poachers and the village has given them an opportunity to earn a living for their families while keeping them away from poaching.
Return to your lodge for an exquisite dinner and an evening by the fireplace.

Day 7: Gorilla Trekking in Volcanoes National Park
This is the highlight of your safari. After an early breakfast, you will be driven to the park headquarters for a briefing before beginning your gorilla trek. Volcanoes National Park is the best location to trek mountain gorillas, and you will be assigned to a habituated gorilla family group.
The trek can take between 2 to 6 hours depending on the gorilla family’s location, but the reward is an unforgettable hour in the company of these gentle giants. Watching gorillas interact in their natural habitat the silverback surveying his family, mothers cradling their infants, juveniles tumbling in the bamboo is one of the most profound wildlife experiences in the world.
Rwanda offers promotional gorilla trekking permits for different visitor categories, with international tourists paying $1,500 per permit, while East African citizens and other African visitors pay reduced rates. Return to your lodge for a late lunch and spend the afternoon at leisure.

Day 8: Golden Monkey Trekking then Return to Kigali for Departure
On your final morning, trek the endangered golden monkeys in the bamboo forests of Volcanoes National Park. These playful, energetic primates are endemic to the Albertine Rift and move quickly through the bamboo canopy. You’ll watch them leap from stalk to stalk, feed on bamboo shoots, and interact in lively social groups.
After the trek, return to the lodge for breakfast and check out. Begin your journey back to Kigali. Depending on your flight schedule, you may have the opportunity to visit additional sites or stop at local markets for souvenirs.
Upon arrival in Kigali, you will be transferred to Kigali International Airport for your departure flight, carrying with you memories of chimpanzees, mountain gorillas, and the warm hospitality of the Land of a Thousand Hills.
