Overview

  • Duration: 2 Days / 1 Night

  • Start & End: Kigali, Rwanda

  • Main Activity: Mountain Gorilla Trekking

  • Destination: Bwindi Impenetrable National Park (Uganda)

  • Best For: Short stays, business travelers, weekend safaris

Day 1: Pick Up from Kigali – Transfer to Bwindi Impenetrable National Park

Your driver-guide will pick you up early in the morning from your hotel in Kigali or directly from Kigali International Airport.

After a short briefing, you will begin the scenic drive toward the Cyanika or Katuna border post for immigration clearance into Uganda. The journey to southern Bwindi (Rushaga or Nkuringo sector) typically takes about 4–5 hours, making this route the fastest way to access Bwindi for gorilla trekking.

Along the way, you will enjoy views of Rwanda’s rolling hills and rural countryside before crossing into southwestern Uganda.

Upon arrival at your lodge near Bwindi, check in and relax. Depending on arrival time, you may take a short community walk or simply enjoy the forest atmosphere in preparation for the next day’s trek.

Dinner and overnight at your selected lodge (budget, mid-range, or luxury option).

Day 2: Gorilla Trekking Experience – Transfer Back to Kigali

After an early breakfast, transfer to the park headquarters for registration and a pre-trek briefing by Uganda Wildlife Authority rangers.

During the briefing, you will be assigned to a specific gorilla family group and guided through trekking rules and safety guidelines.

The Gorilla Trek

The trek can take anywhere from 2 to 6 hours depending on the location of the gorilla family. Bwindi’s terrain is mountainous and forested, so moderate fitness is recommended.

Once the gorillas are located, you will spend one unforgettable hour observing them in their natural habitat. You may witness:

  • Silverbacks guarding their families

  • Mothers nursing infants

  • Juveniles playing

  • Group feeding and grooming behavior

Photography is allowed (without flash), and the experience is carefully regulated to protect the gorillas.

After the trek, return to the lodge for lunch before beginning your drive back to Kigali. Border formalities will be handled en route.

You will arrive in Kigali in the late afternoon or evening and be dropped off at your hotel or Kigali International Airport for departure.
