Located along the Uganda–Kenya border, Mount Elgon National Park is one of East Africa’s hidden gems. With 1,279 km² of protected land, including 1110 km² on the Ugandan side, this park is home to the extinct volcanic giant, Mount Elgon, also known locally as Mount Masaba.

🌋 Mount Elgon – A Dormant Volcano with a Colossal Caldera

Once Africa’s tallest mountain, Mount Elgon has been shaped by millennia of erosion, now ranking as Uganda’s second-highest peak after Margherita Peak in the Rwenzori Mountains. It remains East Africa’s fourth-highest mountain and features the world’s largest volcanic base, stretching over 4,000 km².

While it’s renowned for trekking, Mount Elgon is also rich in biodiversity. The park supports:

Over 400 plant species
More than 296 bird species
Black-and-white colobus monkeys, buffaloes, elephants, red-tailed monkeys, duikers, oribi, and hyenas

You’ll find montane forests at lower altitudes, bamboo belts mid-range, and alpine moorlands at the top. The park is also a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve, reflecting its global conservation significance.

🚗 By Road:
