Located along the Uganda–Kenya border, Mount Elgon National Park is one of East Africa’s hidden gems. With 1,279 km² of protected land, including 1110 km² on the Ugandan side, this park is home to the extinct volcanic giant, Mount Elgon, also known locally as Mount Masaba.
Famous for its gigantic caldera, lush montane forests, waterfalls, and cultural encounters, Mount Elgon offers a serene and less-crowded alternative to other trekking destinations like the Rwenzori Mountains or Mgahinga Gorilla National Park.

🌋 Mount Elgon – A Dormant Volcano with a Colossal Caldera
Once Africa’s tallest mountain, Mount Elgon has been shaped by millennia of erosion, now ranking as Uganda’s second-highest peak after Margherita Peak in the Rwenzori Mountains. It remains East Africa’s fourth-highest mountain and features the world’s largest volcanic base, stretching over 4,000 km².
