Route: Central Circuit via Bujuku Valley
Summit: Vittorio Emanuele Peak (4,890m) – Mount Speke
Difficulty Level: Strenuous (Rock scrambling, no glacier crossing)

Trek Overview

The 5-Day Mount Speke Trek is a demanding but rewarding high-altitude expedition in the Rwenzori Mountains of Uganda. This itinerary follows part of the Central Circuit to Bujuku Valley before ascending Vittorio Emanuele Peak (4,890m), the highest point of Mount Speke.

Unlike Margherita Peak, Mount Speke does not require technical glacier travel, making it suitable for experienced trekkers seeking a true alpine summit without ice climbing. The trek crosses multiple ecological zones — from tropical rainforest to Afro-alpine vegetation — with dramatic views of Mount Stanley, Mount Baker, and the Congo frontier.

What’s Included

  • Uganda Wildlife Authority (UWA) park entrance fees

  • Professional Rwenzori mountain guides

  • Porters and cooking team

  • Full-board meals during the trek

  • Mountain hut accommodation

  • Safety briefings and summit coordination

Note: Personal trekking equipment can be hired separately if required.

Detailed Day-by-Day Itinerary

Day 1: Nyakalengija (1,615m) → Nyabitaba Hut (2,651m)

Estimated Hiking Time: 6–7 hours

The adventure begins at Nyakalengija, the gateway to Rwenzori Mountains National Park. After registration and briefing with your guides and porters, the trek starts with a gradual walk through cultivated farmland before entering dense montane forest.

The trail follows the Mubuku River valley, crossing the Mahoma River before climbing steadily along a forested ridge. Wildlife is often spotted in this zone, including black-and-white colobus monkeys, blue monkeys, and a variety of endemic birds such as the Rwenzori turaco.

The final stretch involves a sustained ascent to Nyabitaba Hut, perched on a ridge with impressive valley views.

Overnight at Nyabitaba Hut.

Day 2: Nyabitaba → John Matte Hut (3,505m)

Estimated Hiking Time: 7–8 hours

Descend from Nyabitaba through forest to Kurt Shafer Bridge, where the Mubuku and Bujuku Rivers converge. The route then climbs through bamboo forest into the heather zone.

As altitude increases, the terrain becomes more rugged with moss-covered rocks and muddy sections. The vegetation transitions to giant heather, lobelias, and groundsels — characteristic of the Rwenzori alpine environment.

After navigating sections of high-altitude bog, arrive at John Matte Hut, set in a broad valley beneath Mount Stanley and Mount Speke.

Overnight at John Matte Hut.

Day 3: John Matte Hut → Bujuku Hut (3,962m)

Estimated Hiking Time: 4–5 hours

Today’s trek crosses the Bujuku River and enters the Lower Bigo Bog, a striking wetland ecosystem dotted with giant lobelias. Movement across the bog requires balance and careful footing across grass tussocks.

The landscape opens toward Lake Bujuku, surrounded by towering peaks. Mount Baker rises to the south while Mount Stanley dominates the western skyline.

Bujuku Hut sits in a narrow glacial valley beneath Stuhlmann Pass. This camp is a key acclimatization point before the summit attempt.

Overnight at Bujuku Hut.

Day 4: Bujuku → Mount Speke (4,890m) Summit → John Matte Hut

Estimated Hiking Time: 8–10 hours total

An early alpine start is required for the summit attempt. From Bujuku, ascend toward Stuhlmann Pass (4,192m), where expansive views extend toward the Virunga Volcanoes in the Democratic Republic of Congo.

The route continues along rocky ridges and steep alpine slopes toward Vittorio Emanuele Peak, the highest point of Mount Speke. The ascent involves sustained climbing over rocky terrain and requires strong physical endurance, but no glacier travel is necessary.

From the summit (4,890m), panoramic views include:

  • Margherita and Albert Peaks on Mount Stanley

  • Mount Baker to the south

  • The Bujuku Valley below

  • The western Congo lowlands

After time at the summit, descend carefully back to Bujuku Hut for a short rest before continuing downward to John Matte Hut for overnight.

This is the most physically demanding day of the trek.

Overnight at John Matte Hut.

Day 5: John Matte → Nyabitaba → Nyakalengija (1,615m)

Estimated Hiking Time: 7–8 hours

Begin the final descent through the heather and bamboo zones. Cross the Kurt Shafer Bridge once more before climbing back to Nyabitaba Hut.

From Nyabitaba, descend through the montane forest ridge to Nyakalengija, completing the trek by late afternoon.

End of expedition.
